Prevention Against ARI

Acute respiratory infections (ARIs) are infections that inflame the airways in your lungs. They can range from the common cold to pneumonia. While there is no specific cure for most ARIs, there are ways to prevent them from spreading and ways to boost your immune system to fight them off.

Here are some ways to prevent ARI:

  • Frequent handwashing: This is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in a public place, blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people: If someone you know is sick, try to avoid close contact with them. This means avoiding hugs, kisses, and sharing personal items.
  • Practice good cough etiquette: When you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or the inside of your elbow. Throw the tissue away after use and wash your hands immediately.
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and exercising regularly can help boost your immune system and make you less susceptible to infection.
  • Don’t smoke: Smoking irritates the lungs and makes them more susceptible to infection.
  • Manage stress: Stress can weaken your immune system. Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as yoga, meditation, or spending time in nature.
  • Get vaccinated: There are vaccines available for some respiratory illnesses, such as influenza (the flu) and pneumonia. Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself from these infections.

By following these tips, you can help reduce your risk of developing an ARI. If you do develop an ARI, most cases will improve on their own within a week or two. However, if your symptoms are severe or do not improve, see your doctor.
