How to Avoid Sleepiness While Studying ?

7 Tips to Stay Awake While Studying

Do you often feel sleepy while studying? This is a common problem for many students, including myself. But don’t worry, I have some tips that can help you stay awake and focused. These tips were originally given by the Buddha to a monk who struggled with sleepiness during meditation, but they can be applied to our studies as well. Let’s dive into these tips:

Change the Perception

Sometimes, the reason for our sleepiness is not where or when we study, but what we study. If you find yourself feeling bored or uninterested in a subject, try changing it to something that you find more enjoyable. This will help you feel more enthusiastic and engaged, keeping your mind and body active.

Memorize It

Recalling and memorizing what you have studied can help keep your mind active and prevent drowsiness. Take some time to review and reflect on what you have learned. This will help you stay away from an inactive state of mind.

Recite

Reciting what you are studying out loud can activate your jaw muscles, mouth, and brain. This physical and mental activity will generate energy and make it easier for you to study without feeling sleepy.

Pinch Your Ears and Rub Your Limbs

By pinching your ears and rubbing your limbs, you can improve blood circulation and activate your muscles. This will enhance your overall alertness and help you stay awake.

Take a Break in Nature

If you are studying or meditating at night and feel sleepy, take a break and go outside. Look at the night sky, enjoy the fresh air, and appreciate the beauty of nature. This will refresh your body and mind, making it easier for you to continue studying or meditating.

Focus on Brightness

If you tend to study in a dark room, the darkness can trigger sleepiness. Try studying under a good light source and imagine that you are studying in the daytime. This perception of light will help keep you awake and alert.

Do Walking Meditation

If you feel sleepy or drowsy while studying or meditating, get up from your seat and do walking meditation. Focus on your bodily postures and movements as you walk back and forth. This will activate both your body and mind, helping you stay awake and focused.

If none of these tips work for you, it may be a sign that you need some rest. In that case, go to bed mindfully and set a specific time to wake up. Remember, it’s all about priorities. When you prioritize studying over sleeping, it becomes easier to stay awake and focused.

Apply these tips to your daily life and see what works for you. Happy studying!
